The government has taken measures to avoid the controversy that engulfed the recruitment of infant teachers early this year when non-Ndebele speaking teachers were deployed in Bulawayo.
In a statement on microblogging site, Twitter, on Tuesday afternoon, the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services said teachers at infant level should provide proof that they are proficient in the local language of the district they will be applying for a teaching post. The statement reads:
Prospective teacher registration for employment began yesterday at District Education offices. Applicants who wish to teach at infant level are required to provide proof of proficiency in the local language spoken at the district level. Contact Ministry of Education and PSC offices.
In March this year, the Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education Mrs Tumisang Thabela had to apologise to the people of Bulawayo over the deployment of teachers that are not proficient in the region’s local languages. She said measures were to be taken to rectify the issue.
