7 MDC Supporters In Court Over Chamisa's Hope Of The Nation Address
Seven MDC supporters appeared before Harare Magistrate facing criminal nuisance charges after they attended party leader, Nelson Chamisa’s Hope of the Nation Address which was violently halted by state police.
Godfrey Karembera, 42, Shoko Zindoga, 42, Victor Maramba, 20, Honzeri Zondai, 37, Gift Ben, 30, Rose Chitsungo, 30, and Maria Tinago 36, were not asked to plead when they appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Victoria Mashamba who released them on $200 bail each.
The accused were also ordered to report every Friday at their nearest police stations as part of their bail conditions.
The state, represented by the prosecutor, Lancelot Mukototsi alleges that the accused and their accomplices blocked the free movement of traffic which resulted in the police dispersing them.
Mukototsi further alleged that the accused started throwing at the police chanting “hatidi zvekupihwa order nemasascam.” (We won’t be told what to do by members of the Salisbury Association for the Care of the African Mentally Handicapped or crazy people).
The police then fired teargas at the group and used sjamboks after charging at the crowd and a number of people were injured with reports suggesting that one woman (pictured) broke her leg.
