People Must Not Wake Up One Morning Demonstrating - Ziyambi
Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said that the banning of MDC public meetings is not based on political instruction since the police are authorised to clear them or explain the reasons against the demonstration.
He was speaking to the Daily News following the violent police clampdown on MDC supporters and passersby in Central Harare on Wednesday. Said Ziyambi:
The law allows them [MDC] to negotiate with the regulatory authority [Police]. That’s the whole purpose to maintain peace and order.
FeedbackPeople must not wake up one morning demonstrating and in the process affect other people’s rights.
Since August 16 this year, the police have banned most of the MDC’s planned demonstrations across the country.
Recently, police blocked the MDC from having rallies in Harare and Domboshava, and on Wednesday, party president Nelson Chamisa was blocked from holding a gathering at Africa Unity Square.
