President Emmerson Mnangagwa said that the 448 junior doctors fired from the public service have been given 48 hours to return to work without reapplying or being asked many questions.
The President made the remarks following a meeting with Catholic bishops at State House on Thursday. He said of the bishops’ request:
… they [the bishops] requested for a moratorium on the question of doctors for two days.
As of November 26, 448 doctors had been dismissed by the Health Services Board (HSB) after they were found guilty of absenteeism following a court ruling declaring their strike illegal.
Meanwhile, it is not clear if the meeting between President Mnangagwa and the bishops resolved the issue of equipment for hospitals, consumables and living wages for the incapacitated doctors.
