The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has reportedly suspended six investigators pending disciplinary hearings over various allegations of corruption and obstructing the course of justice, Business Times has reported.
The publication further reports that efforts are now underway to do away with the current team of investigators inherited from the Goodson Nguni-led anti-graft body whose members, including Nguni, were resigned last year following suspicions of corruption within its ranks.
Analysts have observed that ZACC is underfunded which makes it vulnerable to corrupt individuals who will be motivated to pay kickbacks for their cases to be concealed. Speaking to Business Times, unnamed sources said:
The current situation at ZACC is tricky because it has invited a lot of sharks who are now manipulating investigators due to the lack of resources. Once you have an anti-corruption body that is continuously raising a resources issue, that means even their course of duty will be compromised.
ZACC has so far arrested a number of prominent people and only a few have been convicted prompting some observers to say that the commission was a mere muppet show to fool people into believing that the government was serious about fighting corruption.
