The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has to date mobilised 516 buses and 410 commuter omnibuses countrywide to operate under its franchise.
This was revealed by ZUPCO acting Chief Executive Officer Evaristo Madangwa in a telephone interview with the Chronicle from Harare. He said:
At the moment we have 516 buses under the scheme countrywide and 410 kombis. We are working on reaching our 1 000 kombis target and the progress made shows that we are heading there.
In Bulawayo, the number of commuter omnibuses under the ZUPCO franchise has risen from 18 last month to 96, with the target has been set at over 220 kombis servicing the city.
ZUPCO urban commuter omnibus operators are charging $2 for a trip compared to $5 charged by the other kombis.
