'Latter-day Prophets Have Ceased To Be Society's Conscience'

Some church leaders have become latter-day prophets who see nothing wrong about the trials and tribulations the Zimbabwean masses are going through.

This was said by a political analyst, Rashweat Mukundu, who was commenting on what the role the church can play in mediating between President Emmerson and MDC leader Nelson Chamisa. Said Mukundu:

It is clear that some church leaders have been co-opted by those in authority, while others are seemingly attempting to genuinely have the country’s political problems addressed comprehensively.

Some are not seeing anything wrong with the evident suffering of Zimbabweans. They are the latter-day prophets who see nothing wrong about the trials and tribulations the masses are going through. They have ceased to be the conscience of society.

Last week, a member of the Inter-Denominational Council of Churches, Andrew Wutaunashe said Chamisa should not question Mnangagwa’s legitimacy but should join other losing presidential candidates in last year’s elections under the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD).

Meanwhile, secretary-general of the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD), Kenneth Mtata, a few months called for talks between Mnangagwa and Chamisa as a way to end the suffering of the masses.
