US Congress To Introduce And Vote On War Powers Resolution To Limit Trump’s Military Actions Regarding Iran

The Speaker of USA Congress, Nancy Pelosi has said that the House will introduce and vote on a war powers resolution this week to limit U.S. President Donald Trump’s military actions regarding Iran.

In a statement released late on Sunday, Pelosi said that the resolution was similar to the other one that was introduced by Senator Tim Kaine in the Senate. She said:

It reasserts Congress’s long-established oversight responsibilities by mandating that if no further Congressional action is taken, the Administration’s military hostilities with regard to Iran cease within 30 days.

Reuters reports that the resolution is likely to sail through the Democratic-led House, but is likely to be opposed in the Senate, which is controlled by Trump’s fellow Republicans, many of whom have said they support the president’s action on Iran.

The development comes when tensions between the two countries have been mounting over the years following the USA’s departure from the 2015 nuclear deal.

On Sunday, the Iraqi parliament voted in support of expelling USA troops from that country following the death of top Iranian commander.

Iran has vowed that it will avenge its commander while Trump has reinforced troops in the Middle East threatening to destroy 50 sites if Iran retaliates.
