Civil Servants Demand Interbank Rate Indexed Salaries

The civil service Apex Council met in Harare on Tuesday and resolved to demand that government workersโ€™ salaries be indexed to the interbank rate.

Apex Council vice secretary Gibson Mushangu said that they will present their demands at the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) meeting called by the government on Friday. Said Mushangu:

As Apex Council, we met and came up with a resolution which is not very different from what we have been coming up with because the situation hasnโ€™t changed. Government hasnโ€™t changed its position from what it has been offering us.

We are saying we are still incapacitated. In fact, the levels of incapacitation have risen and we are no longer able to go to work so when we meet as the NJNC on Friday, we are going to demand that our salaries be indexed to the interbank rate.

Simon Masanga, Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare confirmed the NJNC meeting on Friday but did not reveal what the government is to offer its workers.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstats) recently revealed that the Poverty Datum Line for an average family of five rose to $3 700 last November.
