SADC Claims USA "Lied" That There Was A Discussion On What Caused The Collapse Of The Zimbabwean Economy

Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax, the incumbent Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community has refuted claims by the US Embassy Botswana that she had discussed with the embassy how economic policies and corruption collapsed the Zimbabwean economy.

The US Embassy had posted on Twitter claiming that they had discussed with Dr Tax how “failed economic policies and corruption” had created the current economic crisis in Zimbabwe and not sanctions as claimed by the Zimbabwean government.

In response, Dr Tax said:

This was not part of what was discussed! Might be the position of the Embassy, but definitely not SADC’s position.

The conversation was joined by prominent journalist and filmmaker, Hopewell Chin’ono who responded to the US Embassy Botswana tweet saying:

As you go about your business, remember that these schools are in Gokwe-Nembudziya. Remember that the Member of Parliament @JusticeMayorW imported a Lamborghini worth US$500000 and evaded paying customs duty using his proximity to Mnangagwa. Then they blame sanctions!

The vice president of the opposition MDC, Tendai Biti also chipped in and said:
The 2019@anticorruption Corruption Perception Index ranks Zim 158 out of 180 only a few points above the lowest country Somalia. This essentially means that in 2 years of an Emmerson regime Zimbabwe has become one of the worst corrupt countries on the globe. What a #shame
In 2012, during the GNU which you were a part of, we had 20 points and were number 163. While being ranked 158 with 24 points is still pathetic, your characterisation of that as having been caused By ED in 2 years is dishonest and false.
The sanctions or corruption debate has raged for long in Zimbabwe and researches have indicated that both issues have been hurting the country.
