"Fans Ended Up Calling Me Shumba," Bonne Speaks On Warriors Fans, AFCON 2021 And Arcadia

England-based Warriors striker, Macauley Bonne has opened up on the warm reception and support he got when he last visited Zimbabwe.

The 24-year-old striker who plies his trade for English Championship club Charlton Athletic said that he craves to play for Zimbabwe in the AFCON 2021 qualifiers. He added:

The last time I came down there it was really fantastic, the boys were so welcoming. I had difficulties understanding Shona, although some fans ended up calling me Shumba (Lion).

It’s a name that I like a lot up to now but honestly I don’t know what it means. I like Zimbabwe a lot, my father was born there before the family relocated to England and before I was born.

He also revealed his interest in reviving Arcadia United a club in Arcadia, a Harare suburb where his father Shaun was born before relocating to the United Kingdom.

Bonne was frustrated when he failed to be part of the Warriors team that participated at last year’s AFCON Finals edition held in Egypt. The British-born striker had no Zimbabwean passport at the time when final team lists were submitted.

The “next Jamie Vardy” has been in impressive form for his club.
