Govt Cracks Down On 'Jiggies' Selling Teachers

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has informed all schools through a circular, that there is an ongoing investigation of teachers who are selling snacks to pupils and conducting extra-lessons during working hours.

The development was revealed by the president of the Progressive Teachers Union Of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), Takavafira Zhou. He said:

All schools have been informed through a circular about the probing of teachers who are conducting extra lessons and selling sweets in schools during working hours.

I can confirm that officials from the Ministry of Secondary and Primary Education and PSC officials visited our school on Monday and interviewed some pupils on who was selling them sweets and snacks at our school. They also interviewed other non-teaching staff.

Zhou said that while PTUZ does not condone the selling of sweets and conducting of extra lessons to pupils during working hours, teachers are earning paltry salaries which cannot sustain them.
