Chamisa Awaits Mbeki's Return To Zimbabwe
MDC president Nelson Chamisa is waiting for a signal from former South African President Thabo Mbeki on when he will return to Zimbabwe to facilitate dialogue with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Chamisa’s spokesperson, Nkululeko Sibanda, told Business Times that his boss was in constant touch with Mbeki though Mnangagwa is believed to be averse to any political dialogue outside the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD). Sibanda said:
We are waiting for communication from Mbeki who had informed us that he wants to contact Mnangagwa and we can know when the dialogue can start as he informed us that Mnangagwa did not want dialogue with Chamisa but we are ready for dialogue.
FeedbackThere is a need to move forward but we need genuine reforms going towards 2023 elections so that we know that we have finished the unresolved legitimacy dispute of 2018.
South Africa’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mphakama Mbete told the publication that his government was ready to support Mbeki to facilitate dialogue among Zimbabwe’s political parties.
Mbeki visited Zimbabwe in November last year and met Mnangagwa, Chamisa and the POLAD interlocutors separately.
