The United States Embassy in Harare has issued a travel advisory to U.S. citizens who intend to travel to South Africa.
Posting on Facebook on Monday 23 March 2020, the embassy said:
U.S. citizens without a visa for South Africa.
U.S. citizens are ONLY permitted to transit South Africa via an airline and must transit the same day; no border crossings are being permitted at this time.
The advisory comes at a time when South Africa has closed some of its borders amid concerns of the coronavirus pandemic.
South Africa has the second-highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Africa and has lately been intensifying efforts to stop the spread and or transmission of the virus.
Reports suggest that some Chinese nationals were turned away at O.R. Tambo Airport.
