The World Food Programme (WFP), a United Nations food agency this Wednesday said that it was mobilising $130 million to fund emergency operations in Zimbabwe until August.
The WFP intends to reduce the effects of the drought and economic recession including and particularly food shortages.
This was revealed by Eddie Rowe, World Food Programme director for Zimbabwe in a statement which reads in part:
With most Zimbabweans already struggling to put food on the table, the COVID-19 pandemic risks even wider and deeper desperation.
We must all do our utmost to prevent this tragedy turning into a catastrophe.
There is an overwhelming shortage of mealie-meal in the country, an issue that has affected the implementation of the national lockdown that is meant to stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus as citizens continue to queue wherever the commodity is reported to be.
The WFP predicted late last year that there will be starvation in the country again in 2020 as the country received poor rains which were not enough to sustain the farming season.
