WATCH: "Hungry" South Africans Protest During Lockdown
South Africans have taken to the streets to register their displeasure over the government’s “neglection” of the “hungry” citizens.
Protestors say that it would be better for them to die of the deadly coronavirus than to die of hunger.
This comes days after South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday announced an “extraordinary budget” of R500 billion to address the huge socioeconomic effects of the coronavirus pandemic, saying that “our country and the world we live in will never be the same again.”
Ramaphosa said that the government had decided on a six-months temporary coronavirus grant to assist the most vulnerable.
He added that child support grant recipients will receive an extra R300 in May and from June an extra R500.
The president added that the government will also allocate an extra R260 for other grant beneficiaries for the next 6 months.
Ramaphosa also pledged to prioritise “the relief of hunger and social distress across our communities,” including with the distribution of 250,000 food parcels in the coming week.
