Bulawayo Vendors Enthused Over Relocation Decision
The Bulawayo Vendors Traders Association (BVTA) has welcomed the decision by the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) decision to relocate all vendors from the city centre to the high-density suburbs.
In a letter to leaders of vendor associations last week, BCC Director of Housing, Doctor Khumalo said the move to relocate the vendors was done to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, BVTA director Michael Ndiweni is of the view that the move will ensure that women, who used to get mugged and harassed as they rushed to the market early in the morning, will be safe. Ndiweni said:
We believe that the relocation of vendors and traders will help reduce cases of women getting mugged or harassment in the wee hours of the morning as they rush to the market to order goods for reselling.
BCC has also permanently closed some informal markets in the Central Business Centre (CBD) including Khothama Market, popular for selling second-hand clothes.
