Millers To Put A Govt Stamp On All Subsidised Mealie Meal To Stop Dealers From Profiteering On Government Subsidies.
Small and Medium Millers’ Association of Zimbabwe(SMMAZ) is reportedly involved in a pilot project of branding all government subsidised mealie meal with a government subsidy stamp, The Herald reports. This comes amid reports that the government subsidised mealie meal is being siphoned to the black market while the formal market is left with nothing.
This was revealed by SMMAZ interim chairman Mr Davis Muhambi who said:
SMMAZ is glad to announce that it will be embarking on a campaign whose main objective among others, is to ensure that subsidy roller meal reaches the intended consumer and is not diverted onto the black market.
FeedbackAs a first step in implementing this campaign, SMMAZ has adopted a standard Government subsidy stamp design which it has implemented on the packaging of member millers as a pilot project
This has fuelled the channelling of subsidy maize meal to the black marketand dealers are now profiteering at the expense of citizens.” Once it is easy to identify by way of the subsidy stamp, citizens can demand to purchase maize meal at the regulated price
Mealie meal shortages ravaging the country have made people defy lockdown restrictions as they queue for mealie meal in various parts of the country.
