Mamombe, Chimbiri, Marova Remanded
Three female members of the opposition MDC Alliance, Joannah Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri have this Wednesday appeared before Harare magistrate Barbra Mateko who remanded them pending a bail ruling on Thursday
The trio is accused of having violated Section 37 of the Criminal Code and Statutory Instrument 99 of 2020 which bars all public gatherings during the fight against COVID 19 by participating and or organising the hunger protest on 13 May.
Representing the three, Jeremiah Bamu and Roselyn Hanzi of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, argued that the proposal for stringent bail conditions that include $2 000 and reporting three times a day to the nearest police station was burdensome.
It is the state’s case that the trio planned and or participated in the unsanctioned flash food protest that was held in Warren Park on 13 May thereby violating the lockdown regulation which prohibits gatherings of people amounting to or exceeding 50.
The state notified that Stanley Manyenga, the MDC Alliance youth assembly chairman for Harare, had also been arrested for participating in the demo while other participants are still wanted by police.
Meanwhile, the trio is still receiving medical attention for injuries sustained from torture by alleged state security agents.
