The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr Moussa Faki Mahamat, is under fire after he condemned human rights abuses against the people of colour in the United States of America when he has not responded to human rights abuses in Zimbabwe.
Mahamat had issued a statement condemning the murder of George Floyd that occurred in the United States of America at the hands of law enforcement officers.
Responding to Mahamat’s statement, some said the chairperson was being hypocritical as he had remained mum on allegations that three “young ladies were abducted, tortured, and sexually assaulted by Zimbabwean state authorities.”
Another social media user weighed in saying the African Union has not been so enthusiastic when condemning human rights abuses by African leaders if at all the union does condemn. The user said:
Then you’re definitely ignoring what’s happening around Africa….. women are being raped every second minute, our people are being slaughtered in the DRC, Our brothers & sisters are being traded for nothing in Libya ….. and you don’t seem to be doing anything.
This follows the alleged abduction of Jonnah Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova, all MDC youth officials by alleged state security agents following a hunger protest.
