The United States of America embassy in Harare has queried why the Zimbabwe Republic Police and State prosecutors were quick to bring charges against three hospitalised MDC Alliance activists while nothing has been done to find their alleged torturers.
Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri, and Netsai Marova were on Thursday granted bail $1 000 bail each by a Harare magistrate on charges of planning and or participating in an unsanctioned demonstration on 13 May this year.
In a statement through its social media channel, the US embassy in Harare said:
Police and prosecutors brought swift charges against women opposition leaders Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri, and Netsai Marova for participating in an unauthorized demo. When will their abductors face charges?
Meanwhile, some commentators accused the United States of hypocrisy, pointing to incidents of police brutality against black people in the US by police.
Earlier this week a black man, George Floyd, was choked to death by white police officers while he was pinned on the ground in Minneapolis.
