EFF Zimbabwe Condemns Arrest And Detention Of Advocate Mpofu {Full Text}

EFF Zimbabwe strongly condemns the arrest and detention of Advocate Thabani Mpofu by the Zimbabwean government.

The scale and nature of detentions of opposition figures or those perceived to be opposition figures is unwarranted and unacceptable.

It appears that the government of Zimbabwe has taken the route of selectively applying the law whereby those who are part of the regime are spared and those who are perceived as threats by the regime are hounded and brought before the courts.

Sadly the government of Zimbabwe by its deeds confirms what we already know, that it is indeed operating as a rogue state.

The arrest of public opposition figures is paraded in front of the partisan government-sponsored media whose aim is to serve their masters by discrediting the hard-earned credentials of the hardworking Zimbabweans.

The Zimbabwe government is sending a clear message through the arrest of Adv. Mpofu that it does not tolerate criticism and that those who attempt to do so will be severely punished.

This development is sad and makes a mockery the government’s claim of adhering to the rule of law and their now-discredited new dispensation mantra.

EFF Zimbabwe sees the arbitrary arrests as an attack to all Zimbabweans. No one is safe except those who are in the inner circles of Zanu-PF. This irresponsible and corrupt application of the rule of law must be totally condemned at all times.

EFF Zimbabwe is profoundly concerned that the government is using the cover of lockdown restrictions to the lockdown people’s freedom and to severely crack down on legitimate opposition voices.

EFF Zimbabwe calls upon the government of Zimbabwe to release from custody Adv Mpofu and many other Zimbabweans who are victims of politically motivated arrests. Zimbabweans must be allowed to exercise their constitutional right of freedom of expression and freedom of speech.

EFF Zimbabwe asserts that it stands firm against abuse of power-driven by the desire by those in government to continue to cling to power to protect their ill-gotten wealth.

We advise that what is a crisis of priority for the Zimbabwean government should be fixing the economy and the healthcare system to save the lives of our people.

Zimbabwe like many other countries is in the middle of a health emergency caused by the coronavirus. This is not the time for cheap political gains. It is the time for mature, responsible and compassionate governance.

Zimbabweans must defend their civil constitutional rights which are under attack from the Munangagwa led administration in the pretext of national security mantra.
