The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has demanded justice for two Zimbabwean workers who were reportedly shot and killed by their Chinese employers in Gweru.
The alleged tragedy was reported by MDC Alliance deputy spokesperson in the Youth Assembly, Womberai Nhende who posted on Twitter on the 21st of June 2020 saying they were shot over a salary dispute. He said:
A chinese national has shot and injured two natives in Gweru over a salary dispute. And no arrest has been made.
It is not clear as to when the incident happened. Responding to the post, ZCTU said:
The government has sold the country to China. Now the Chinese do as they pleased & illtreat Zimbabwean workers in our own country because they know we have no protection from the government. The liberators have turned our good country into a predator state. #justiceforworkers
There have been numerous reports of abuse of workers by Chinese employers in the country with some workers reportedly working in unsafe working environments and unsafe conditions.
Last year, Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa claimed that Chinese investors were not in compliance with health and safety rules, environmental laws, labour practices and all aspects of human rights.
