The ruling ZANU PF has said that current squabbles in the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was weakening the party adding that it was also a blow to democracy in the country.
This comes when the MDC is divided into two warring factions – one led by Nelson Chamisa and the other led by Thokozani Khupe, since the demise of the party’s founding leader, Morgan Tsvangirai in 2018.
Posting on Twitter, ZANU PF said:
Democracy thrives on strong opposition We pray MDC will soon fix their problems. MDC’s current factional fights are also affecting service delivery in urban areas, ZANU PF supporters like every other urbanites are equally affected by the chaos holding in opposition.
Meanwhile, MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa claims that the ruling party was sponsoring the faction led by Khupe to destroy the opposition in the country.
The theory gained popularity when the state military and police officers assisted youths belonging to the Khupe faction to take control of the Morgan Tsvangirai House which the MDC Alliance was using as its headquarters.
On the other hand, MDC-T is accusing MDC Alliance officials of abusing the party’s constitution and usurping power from Khupe whom they say was the legitimate and automatic heir to the throne after Tsvangirai.
