Zimbabwe’s largest mobile telecommunications company Econet Wireless has advised its customers that it will review its data bundle prices in the wake of mounting costs and rising inflation.
Econet has however not revealed the new data prices, but the price adjustments will be effected tomorrow, Monday, 31 August 2020. The company said in a notice to its customers:
Dear valued customer. Please take note, bundle prices for Data will be reviewed effective Monday 31 August 2020. Dial *143# to buy Data Bundles.
Econet’s main data bundle prices are indeed currently lower than those of its competitors in the mobile industry, NetOne and Telecel.
An 80 MB Daily bundle is ZWL$32.00 on Econet and on NetOne the same data allocation is ZWL$50.00
It is thought the planned bundle price adjustment will bring its data tariffs at par with those of NetOne and Telecel.
According to Techzim, late last month, the Post and Telecommunications Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) gave mobile network operators (MNOs) the green light to increase prices.
Mobile Network Operators were also given the green light to charge in both local and foreign currency in accordance with SI 185/2020
This meant that MNOs were able to charge at the interbank rate at the time POTRAZ authorisation was granted. POTRAZ, however, didn’t give any indication on the interval structure of the price increases.
