Woman Dumps Newly-born Baby Into Mine Shaft, Blames Economic Hardships

A Mberengwa woman has been sentenced to six months in jail or 210 hours of community service at Mavorovondo Secondary School in the district after she was found guilty of infanticide.

Ebber Mudadisi (35), of Damsite Village under Chief Bvute, threw her newly-born baby into a mine shaft, saying she had nothing to feed it due to prevailing economic challenges.

Mudadisi appeared before Mberengwa magistrate Evia Matura last week where she pleaded guilty and said that she fell pregnant by mistake and the man who impregnated her denied responsibility. She was left with no other as she has other kids to look after.

She said she dropped the baby into the shaft hoping that a Good Samaritan would pick her up and look after her but unfortunately the baby hit the bottom of the pit with her head and died.
