A senior MDC-T official has accused the party’s interim leader Thokozani Khupe and secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora of playing dirty ahead of the extraordinary congress that was ordered by the Supreme Court early this year.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official, who is contesting for the presidency, said the new nomination process that has been adopted is a departure from both tradition and procedure in the party.
He argued that the expulsion from the party of one of the contestants, Abedinico Bhebhe, the acting organising secretary, was in violation of party procedures. He said:
It must be stated categorically that according to the MDC constitution, a standing committee member can only be expelled by a two-thirds vote of the national council in a secret ballot.
There is no substitution for this provision in the constitution of the MDC.
Bhebhe was expelled from the party on Saturday “for grossly violating the constitution of the party [by] supporting another political party other than the MDC-T”.
The MDC-T also announced that Khupe, Mwonzora, party chairman Morgen Komichi and former Harare mayor Elias Mudzuri were nominated for the presidency.
The MDC-T has been holding meetings via WhatsApp ostensibly to avoid the risk of the novel coronavirus.
