ZIFA Faces A Possible Ban From COSAFA Champions And A $150K Fine
ZIFA is reportedly facing a staggering fine of $150 000 and a possible ban from future COSAFA championship after the SRC reportedly failed to sanction an Under-20 trip to South Africa for the COSAFA Championship slated for next month, the Chronicle reports.
ZIFA reportedly confirmed participation before the SRC poured water on their plans saying it needs a 30 days notice. A source told the Chronicle that:
Yes (the trip been aborted), the sports commission says they need 30 days notification but they were notified on the 9th of October and they cleared teams to start training on the 16th. They want names of travelling party 30 days in advance which is not possible in football
FeedbackWhen contacted for comment ZIFA Communication Manager Xolisani Dube said:
We confirm that we have received correspondence from SRC not approving the U-20 team to travel to South Africa. We are disappointed by this decision and we have since appealed to the Minister of Sport, Kirsty Coventry.
This comes a few short days after the U17 National Team was disqualified for age cheating during the initial screening test of the players’ age. ZIFA said they were appealing the decision by CAF to disqualify the boys meanwhile the team came back home on Monday after the disqualification.
