Mwonzora Assumes The Role Of The Opposition Leader On Parliament’s Top Committee

Newly elected MDC President Douglas Mwonzora has assumed the position of the opposition leader in the parliament’s top committee, the Standing Rules and Orders Committee, The Herald reports.

Mwonzora reportedly replaced Mutare Central legislator Mr. Innocent Gonese who has been part of the committee for a long time. The committee is responsible for setting the policies and management of Parliament

When contacted for comment Mwonzora said he was nominated last year and it was not a new development:

I was nominated late last year, but the announcement could not be made because Parliament was on recess,It is not a new or recent development.

According to the publication, the committee comprises the following offices/people:

  • The Speaker of the National Assembly (Chairperson),
  • President of the Senate (Deputy Chairperson),
  • Deputy Speaker,
  • Deputy President of the Senate,
  • Minister of Finance
  • Two other ministers appointed by the President,
  • The Leader of Government Business,
  • The Leader of the Opposition,
  • Chief whips of all parties represented in Parliament,
  • The President of the National Council of Chiefs,
  • Eight members elected by Parliament four from each House,
  • Two members appointed by the Speaker of the National Assembly
  • The President of the Senate.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports are saying some activists in his party are crafting a strategy to get Mwonzora arrested for misappropriating funds, reports that have been denied by his spokesperson Witness Dube.
