Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital has given an update on the state of a boy who was mauled by a hyena in Zaka District in Masvingo Province in May this year. Pindula News present the statement issued by Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals below.
Both mainstream and social media were awash with the story, making it of public interest.
The boy was bitten by a hyena at a church service on the fateful night of 7 May 2021 and he suffered severe facial injuries and disfigurement. He was immediately taken to Mashoko Mission Hospital where he was transferred to Masvingo Provincial Hospital and eventually to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for specialist surgical treatment. He was admitted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on the 8th of May 2021.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the specialists who took part in the treatment and care of the child. The child’s life is now out of danger but requires facial reconstruction. He is taking his lessons, can read, write and play games with his phone. Special mention goes to our specialist Pediatricians, General Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, Plastic Surgeons, Maxillofacial Surgeons, ENT Surgeons, Neuro Surgeons, Anesthetists, Dieticians, Physiotherapists, Nurses and all those who took part in the treatment and care of this particular child.
Some well-wishers have now offered to airlift the Child to South Africa for the required facial reconstruction and rehabilitation. The child is currently under Dr Manana, a Consultant Specialist Maxillofacial Surgeon. While the parents and the well-wishers acknowledge the expertise within our hospital to carry out the facial reconstruction, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals respects their wish to have the procedure done in South Africa.
