The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the death of five people in an accident that occurred along Chivhu-Gutu road, ZBC News reports.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Nyathi told the national broadcaster that the accident occurred when an Inter-Africa bus collided with a Honda Stream vehicle while trying to overtake another bus.
According to Masvingo Mirror, the head-on collision occurred near Matizha Business Centre in Gutu District on Saturday morning.
A motorist who arrived soon after the accident said he took one of the survivors to Matizha Clinic.
Eyewitnesses told the publication that an Inter-Africa bus was trying to overtake another bus when it encroached into the lane of the oncoming Honda Stream.
The Honda Stream swerved off the road but the bus did the same and they collided.
Last year the government banned private commuter omnibuses (kombis) resulting in little non-commercial vehicles (4 passengers) overloading passengers to fill in the void in the transport sector.
The transport sector is now dominated by Mushikashika vehicles which although they have capacities of 4 passengers are carrying as many as nine passengers.
