Malaba Term Extension: Mnangagwa's End Goal Is The Presidential Term - Mtetwa

Prominent lawyer Beatrice Mtwtwa has said president Emerson Mnangagwa’s end goal in the extension of Chief Justice Luke Malaba’s term of office might be the extension of the presidential term.

Speaking to MagambaTV’s Cde Fatso, Mtetwa said Malaba’s case is probably a trial run. Watch the video below for more.

President Mnangagwa extended Justice Malaba’s term of office by an additional five years beyond 70 years – retirement age.

Mnangagwa used the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 2 which he had recently signed into law. The changes, among other things, give the president authority to make key judicial appointments.

Both the extension of Malaba’s term of office and the adoption of the Constitutional Amendment Bill No.2 have been challenged at the courts.

Some analysts say Mnangagwa is making the changes to retain power in 2023 as courts might be instrumental as was the case in 2018 when the opposition MDC Alliance rejected the outcome of the presidential election.
