The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has announced the arrest of two Mudzi Rural District Council officials for criminal abuse of office.
In a statement, ZACC said Mudzi Rural District Council’s Chief Executive Officer and the Head of Human Resources, in that order, Victor Nyamutswa and Farai Mutambatuwisi raised workers’ salaries without following due procedure. Reads ZACC statement:
ZACC has arrested the Chief Executive Officer of Mudzi Rural District Council Victor Nyamutswa and the Head of Human Resources Farai Mutambatuwisi for awarding employees, including undeserving senior management staff, a 150% salary and allowances increment without council resolution.
In the second count, Nyamutswa is accused of double-dipping from the local authority’s fuel facility.
This comes after reports that the anti-graft body had also arrested Muzarabani and Guruve councils’ officials for criminal abuse of office.
Commenting on the ZACC statement on social media, some said the arrests were not worth mentioning when little is being done to bring “big” offenders to book.
Some said instead of arresting them for raising workers’ salaries, the Mudzi officials should actually be given awards for alleviating poverty.
Some said ZACC should be focusing on the president of the Zimbabwe Mining Federation, Ms Henrietta Rushwaya who was previously arrested for allegedly smuggling processed gold.
Rushwaya was later released on bail.
