The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable Felix Mhona is confident contractors will manage to rehabilitate the targeted 300 kilometres of the Harare-Beitbridge highway by December this year as they have already completed 240 kilometres.
The multi-million dollar Harare-Beitbridge Highway rehabilitation project is progressing well as contractors are on the ground to ensure that set targets are met. Minister Mhona said:
At the beginning of 2021 we were around 120km that was opened to traffic and as we speak we have opened 240km to traffic and when we say open to traffic we do not count detours. Detours only show that there is work in progress, if we count detours were are beyond 300km. Remember also that we are using local contractors creating employment within communities.
We have a company that is now starting works from Beitbridge, Bitumen World this will put to rest soothsayers, who have been a sceptic about the project. So we are now in Matabeleland South province. It is only that we started with specific arrears, which were bad but the whole project will be covered.
Early this year, President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially launched the Second Phase of the Emergency Roads Rehabilitation Programme after Cabinet had declared the country’s road network a state of disaster.
