World Cup 2022: Mapeza Hopeful Warriors Can Qualify

Warriors coach, Norman Mapeza is hopeful Zimbabwe might still qualify for the FIFA2022  World Cup that will be hosted by Qatar.

Zimbabwe currently anchors Group with just a point after three matches.

The Warriors drew one match against South Africa and lost two against Ethiopia and Ghana.

They are scheduled to play Ghan at the National Sports Stadium this afternoon and they have to win if they have to revive hopes of qualifying.

Mapeza admitted, however, while speaking to journalists after touching down at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Monday, that Zimbabwe faces a mammoth task. He said:

We have to be realistic. When I took over I knew what was going on. We had lost five points out of six and when you are taking part in such a competition like the World Cup qualifiers, losing five points is massive.

Playing countries such as Ghana is always difficult, but there is still hope; we can’t give up now. What we now have to do is to make sure in the remaining matches we try to build a team that will take part in January in the Afcon tournament.

We play each and every game looking for a positive result. After what I saw in Ghana, there are some positives and if we can carry on from there, then I think we can get a positive result tomorrow.

The former Warriors skipper promised to make changes to his line-up that started in the Cape Coast, with Brendon Galloway set to start for his Warriors debut.

He could be partnered in central defence by Teenage Hadebe, who was also surprisingly relegated to the bench for the Saturday match in a gamble that backfired badly for Mapeza.
