The country’s main opposition party, the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa has announced the death of one of its members, Nyasha Zhambe Mawere who was allegedly abducted and tortured by suspected ZANU PF activists in Gutu.
The MDC Alliance said Mawere was abducted and severely tortured by ZANU PF thugs after he attended Chamisa’s meeting with community leaders in Gutu, Masvingo Province. The party said in a statement:
The MDC Alliance mourns the sad passing of our member, Nyasha Zhambe Mawere.
He was abducted and severely tortured by ZANU PF thugs after he attended President [Nelson Chamisa] community leaders’ meeting in Gutu. Political violence must stop. The regime is at war with the people.
Last month Chamisa and his team were attacked again by ruling party supporters, who barricaded roads to deny his convoy access to a village in Masvingo.

A group of about 200 ZANU PF supporters descended on Chamisa’s convoy and damaged five cars and injured five opposition supporters.
Chamisa was undertaking community interface meetings around the country as he mobilises support ahead of the 2023 elections.
The opposition leader faced similar attacks from ZANU PF members when he toured Manicaland and Mashonaland West provinces.
