Police Hunt For 12 Coronavirus "Super-spreaders"

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is still searching for 12 coronavirus positive inmates who escaped from a quarantine centre in Beitbridge, Matabeleland South province last Friday.

The inmates had been deported from neighbouring South Africa, and after testing positive for COVID-19, health authorities placed them into mandatory quarantine.

ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the 12 quarantine escapees are yet to be accounted for. Said Nyathi:

The deportees are still on the run. We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding their escape.

In a statement last week, Asst Comm Nyathi described the inmates as coronavirus “super-spreaders”, suggesting that they were “intentionally spreading COVID-19 pandemic to unsuspecting relatives, peers and the general public.”
