Police Arrest 16 Over Kwekwe CCC Rally Violence
Police on Sunday said that they had arrested 16 people in connection with the murder of one person at an opposition political rally in Kwekwe.
The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) said that a supporter was killed while 17 others were injured and taken to the hospital following an attack by suspected ZANU PF activists who were armed with stones, spears and machetes.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at Mbizo 4 Shopping Centre while CCC leader Nelson Chamisa was addressing a campaign rally.
In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they are carrying out investigations and will release more details. Said Nyathi:
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the violent incident which occurred in Kwekwe this afternoon in which one person died.
The ZRP also confirms that 16 suspects have been picked up in connection with the incident.
Police investigations are now in progress and more details will be released soon.
The ZRP urges citizens to be peaceful and shun violence at all times.
This incident comes a day after Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said it’s a matter of time before ZANU PF crushes the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) “like lice” to prevent the opposition party from winning elections and attaining control of the State.
Chiwenga made the remarks while addressing ZANU PF supporters at a campaign rally in Kwekwe at Mbizo Stadium on Saturday.
