By-elections Update: Electoral Fraud Cases
A few incidents of electoral fraud were recorded on Saturday when Zimbabwe held by-elections in various of the country.
Fraud Case 1:
At Mbizi Primary School in Harare, Tafadzwa Mupagure, used his sister’s ID claiming his ID was lost. He was arrested.
Fraud Case 2:
In Crowborough West, Elizabeth Chinyoka, used her sister Zvanyadza’s ID. The offence came to light when Zvanyadza also went to vote. She was arrested.
FeedbackFraud Case 3:
Observers in Harare East reported that a voter went to cast his vote only to find that someone had already voted using his credentials. Further enquiry revealed that his own brother used a fake ID to vote using his full details. A report was made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
In a related case, police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said there were isolated cases of misconduct where one person was arrested after casting his vote in Sunningdale, Harare. Nyathi said:
We have one person who was arrested in Sunningdale 2 in Harare. The person came to cast his vote, he went through all the voting procedures and he was given his ballot paper. After casting his ballot paper, he came out of the booth and he took a photograph of his ballot paper indicating where he had put his vote.
The man, unbeknown to him, was being watched by alert polling officers who quickly alerted police who arrested him
Observers said there was still a need for the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to invest in voter education as the electorate seems to be ignorant of many things.
Meanwhile, the ZEChas started announcing results. See more on By-elections Update: ZEC Starts Announcing Results
