The Anglican Church Diocese of Manicaland has asked for more land from President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government to build church-run schools.
Speaking in an interview with NewsDay on Sunday, 24 April, Bishop Eric Ruwona said the Anglican Church has a rich history of running schools in Zimbabwe. He said:
We have a rich history of running schools and we are happy that we have a government interested in infrastructure development.
We are ready to partner and we are pleading with the government to give us land so that we can help it to build schools after announcing it has a backlog of 3 000 schools.
The clergyman expressed satisfaction with how the Anglican Church-run schools performed in the 2021 Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council Ordinary and Advanced level examinations. He said:
l am a proud head of the church, thanks to our education development as our schools performed well at the Ordinary and Advanced levels 2021 result.
Our schools did very well, we have St Faith, St Augustine and St David Bonda High school among others.
The schools really raised the church’s flag very high and we want to thank our teachers and headmasters for their sterling work.
Bishop Ruwona denied allegations that church-run schools are excluding marginalised and poor children saying the claims are totally opposite of what the church does.
