President Emmerson Mnangagwa has proclaimed a by-election in Gokwe Kabuyuni constituency to fill a post which became vacant following the death of Leonard Chikomba, who was the elected Member of Parliament in the National Assembly for the constituency. PROCLAMATION by HIS EXCELLENCY THE HONOURABLE EMMERSON DAM-BUDZO MNANGAGWA, G.C.Z.M., President of Zimbabwe and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces of Zimbabwe;
WHEREAS it is provided by section 39(2) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13], that after the President has been notified in terms of the said section of a vacancy in the membership of Parliament, he shall issue a Proclamation ordering a new election to fill the vacancy in the same manner, mutatis mutandis, as is provided in section 38 of the said Act in regard to a general election;
AND WHEREAS, the Speaker of Parliament has notified me in writing of a vacancy in Parliament due to the death of Leonard Chikomba, who was the elected Member of Parliament in the National Assembly for the constituency of Gokwe–Kabuyuni:
NOW, THEREFORE, under and by virtue of the powers vested in the President as aforesaid, I do, by this my Proclamation —
(a). order a new election for the constituency of Gokwe-Kabuyuni; and
(b). fix Friday the 22nd day of July 2022, and the Magistrates’ Court, Emmerson Dambudz.o Mnangagwa Street, Gweru, as the date on which and the place at which a nomination court shall sit in terms of section 46 of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13], to receive nominations of candidates for election for the constituency of Gokwe-Kabuyuni; and
(c) fix Saturday the 27th day of August 2022, as the day on which a poll shall be taken if a poll becomes necessary in terms of section 46(17(c) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13].
