Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere, has said “ZANU PF thugs” assaulted citizens who had attended a rally that was set to be addressed by party leader Nelson Chamisa in Gokwe this Thursday.
Mahere also said Chamisa’s convoy was attacked. She said:
BREAKING: Violence perpetrated by Zanu PF thugs has broken out at the venue of the Gokwe Kabuyuni Rally. Zanu PF thugs are assaulting citizens who had come to attend the rally. Change Champion in Chief @nelsonchamisa’s convoy has also been attacked.
Party vice president, Tenda Biti condemned the attack and urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa to stop the lawlessness. He said:
The escalating levels of violence across the length & breadth of Zim are simply not acceptable. Mr Mnangwagwa has the power, the duty & obligation to uphold the constitution & stop the orgy of lawlessness. Too much blood has been shed in this country & it’s time to say NO.
Earlier, Mahere reported that four journalists were “heavily beaten by ZANU PF thugs” in Gokwe ahead of the rally. The four are Tongai Mwenje is SportBrief’s founder and Managing Editor; Toneo Rutsito the Funder and Editor of Technomag an online technology magazine, Pellagia Mupurwa a journalist with Technomag and Chelsea Mashayamombe an Editor at ZimDaily.
Fears abound that violence will escalate towards the 2023 elections as was the case in 2008.
