Teachers Union Say US$25 Pay Rise Is "A Joke"

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has scoffed at the US$25 increment to public sector workers’ allowances by the government, describing it as too little.

On Tuesday, the government and public sector unions met under the National Joint Negotiating Forum where the new offer was tabled.

Posting on Twitter on Tuesday, PTUZ said the paltry increment will lead to industrial action by teachers. It said:

The govt, as usual, thinks it’s all a joke. An increment of only $25 when service providers have already wiped out more than that, really?

It would seem that govt is pushing teachers towards real action. It’s a dog’s breakfast.

In a letter updating public sector workers on Tuesday on the outcome of the NJNC, Apex Council chairperson Cecelia Alexander said the wage increase is with effect from 1 September 2022. She wrote:

The employer offered an increase of 25 % on the USD100 to make USD125 and maintained the USD75 Covid allowances to make the total USD package USD200 with effect from the 1st of September 2022.

The workers acknowledged the increase but chose to wait for specific modalities on how this is going to be implemented.

The employer did not offer or table any increase on the ZWL salary and the workers demanded that this be also reviewed without fail.

In the end, the government side asked for time out to consult.

While we see the teacher struggle to make ends meet, which drains him/her emotionally and physically, we forget that it is our children and grandchildren who are going to live a life worse than of the presently struggling teacher.

Govt has failed the teachers and the civil service at large. I feel that teachers should run their own affairs and get paid from the school fees paid by students. Instead of paying the useless govt the fees should pay teachers like what is done in the police force where they retain a certain amount paid through fines.

We are vocal because teaching someone to read and write is no joke plus we know what we are worthy we deserve to buy cars and houses and to dress professionally.Should I dress like a drug addict and teach your child??? why we are vocal??? Because others have been silenced...can a soldier say something???Can a policeman utter a word ivo vari under discipline

I have an ask.How much are the teachers in private colleges paid?
King Kudzai · 2 years ago
There's no average salary for private teachers.Let me use Harare as an example, If you are from Harare. A teacher from Herentals is different from one in Tynwald but these two dont get anywhere near Heritage,Chisipite Girls or St Johns.

@Mambo Kudzai You can still give figures for schools that you know.
