Joe Biden Warns Russia Of “Swift And Severe” Costs If Moscow Annex More Of Ukraine

United States of America’s President Joe Biden on Friday warned Russia there will be “swift and severe” costs if Moscow uses “sham” referendums to annex more of Ukraine.

Biden said in a statement:

Russia’s referenda are a sham, a false pretext to try to annex parts of Ukraine by force in flagrant violation of international law. We will work with our allies and partners to impose additional swift and severe economic costs on Russia.

Kremlin-held regions of eastern and southern Ukraine entered the second day of voting to become part of Russia on Saturday.

The voting on whether Russia should annex four regions of Ukraine started Friday, dramatically raising the stakes seven months after Moscow’s troops invaded.

The votes even prompted a reaction from Beijing, Moscow’s closest ally since the war began in February.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in comments made to his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba at the UN General Assembly Friday, said the “sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected.”

Voting is being held in Russian-controlled areas of Donetsk and Lugansk in the east, and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south.

Polling stations open Tuesday for residents to cast ballots on the final day. It was also possible to vote at the building in Moscow that represents the Donetsk breakaway region.

The vote was announced earlier last week after a Ukrainian counteroffensive seized most of the northeastern Kharkiv region, bringing hundreds of settlements back under Kyiv’s control after months of Russian occupation.

The four regions’ integration into Russia would represent a major escalation of the conflict as Moscow would consider any military move there as an attack on its own territory.

The referendums are reminiscent of the one held after Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimea in 2014.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday denounced the polls describing them as “crimes against international law and the law of Ukraine.”

Earlier Friday, G7 nations said the polls will “never” be recognized and have “no legal effect or legitimacy.”

Maparamuro, i agree with your observation. As we speak Usa, occupied northen Syria & they are busy looting Syrian oil & gas. During Trump’s era, America recognized the Golan heights annexxed from Syria as part of Israel. America & Nato caused the splinter of Yugoslavia. They lied about WMD in Iraq & they bombed it to the ground whilst the world watched. No one imposed sanctions on them

Russia must not be allowed under whatever circumstances to annex parts of Ukraine as it did with Cremia in 2014. EU and United States of America must continue supporting Ukraine with modern weapons. Russia in not invenceable. [ IZIZI RINE MANYANGA ]. Putin is hard-headed. His friends, China and India, told him at the United Nations General Assembly [ UNGA ] that this century we now live in is no longer conducive to **** wars like the one it initiated with Ukraine. [ RUSSIA IZIZI RINE MANYANGA ]. [ VORUZHINJI NGAVA BUDE NE HUWANDU HWAVO MUNA 2023 VAVHOTERE CCC ZVINE MUTSINDO ]. Yours sincerely William Sonboy CHINEMBIRI [ THE BUSH LAWYER ].

Ever been bullied? Bullying follows no rules. Israel is occupying Palestine against so called international law and because it's a USA ally that law does not apply. America has invaded countries so far away from its borders mainly to stop the spread of so****m and to spread imperialism because America does not practise democracy. Bullies don't believe in fair play, they just believe their military might. No empire last forever, history has that on record.

Bla bla bla.. .US annexed Hawaii and Texas by force but no one said anything.
Mafirakureva · 2 years ago
@Revelation, move with time. What was acceptable 200 years ago is not acceptable now.

@ mafirakureva are you serious sir?are you kidding me?🙄🙄🙄
Mafirakureva · 2 years ago
@Tintin, maybe I should elaborated. Yes, democratic Amigos annexed Texas from the Spanish, but can you imagine Americans annexing, with impunity, the likes of Acapulco today? Certainly not. if you look at world trends today, the trend is to divest from faraway territories as much as possible. Britain gave away Hong Kong, they are trying to get out of Gibraltar. Ditto the French as regards the islands in the Indian Ocean. Yes, Territorial annexation took place 200 years ago and it was accepted. But to do so today is unthinkable
Tintin · 2 years ago
@ mafirakureva your argument is reasonable but it overlooks an important geopolitical fact...e Mexico of 200yrs ago was a Spanish colony therefore a natural enemy of America which was a colony of the British empire...both now have cordial relations...they are free nations...on the other hand Russia and Ukraine are still natural enemies... annexation becomes a political necessity for national security and survival..it's still part of war today as it was 200yrs ago.
