ZACC Spokesperson Faces Expulsion Over Corruption Allegations

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is this Monday expected to swear in a tribunal to enquire into the removal from office of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission Commissioner and spokesperson John Makamure.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services permanent secretary Nick Mangwana said Commissioner Makamure faces a cocktail of allegations. In a Twitter post, Mangwana said:

This afternoon at 1600, State House Harare, His Excellency, President @edmnangagwa will swear in the Tribunal to enquire into the question of removal from office of Commissioner John Makamure of @ZACConline who faces a number of allegations including of a criminal nature.

Just last month, Makamure told The Herald that ZACC was seized with several cases adding that there should be no sacred cows. He said:

The policy of the Government is zero tolerance for any form of corruption. The National Anti-Corruption Strategy (2020-2024), launched by His Excellency President Mnangagwa on 11 July 2020, is the main strategy in the fight against corruption.

In individual cases of corruption, every case will be investigated and punished in accordance with the dictates of our laws.

Reports of corruption involving ZACC officials have eroded public confidence in the anti-graft body.

Some officials are reportedly being bribed by powerful people accused of corruption to throw away their cases.
