Zimbabwe Weather: Thunderstorms Expected In The Coming Days

The Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe has forecasted thunderstorms in isolated places in the coming days. In a weather report and forecast for the period 23-25 October 2022, the MET department said there shall be some showers in some parts of the country. Pindula News presents the report and forecast below:

PREAMBLE

ZIMBABWE EVENING WEATHER REPORT AND FORECAST ISSUED AT 1600 HRS ON SUNDAY 23 OCTOBER 2022 VALID UNTIL TUESDAY 25 OCTOBER 2022.

There were isolated thundershowers in Manicaland Province (from Chisumbanje through to Nyanga) yesterday as moisture was drifting in from the east. This morning moisture drifted into the southern parts of the country, leading to mostly cloudy, windy and mild conditions in provinces such as Matabeleland South, Masvingo and southern areas of Manicaland, with patchy drizzle reaching as far as West Nicholson. However, both the showers in the east and the drizzle to the south were generally light. Meanwhile, a relatively moister cloud band is drifting in from the west.

FORECASTS FOR TOMORROW, MONDAY 24 OCTOBER 2022

Thunder clouds are expected to drift in through Matabeleland South and spread to Bulawayo Metropolitan, southern areas of Matabeleland North, central parts of Midlands, Harare Metropolitan and southern districts of Mashonaland East. Isolated afternoon showers are probable with lightning being a major risk. All other areas should be mostly sunny. Country-wide conditions should be hot and humid by day, becoming mild towards evening.

IMPACTS

• Lightning strikes are a major risk during this period

• Hot and humid daytime conditions may affect the body’s health, with dehydration and sunburn being common during this period.

• FIRE SEASON: Dry and hot conditions exacerbate the spread of veldt fires.

ACTIONS TO TAKE

• When thunder roars it is best to be indoors

• Keep hydrated and avoid prolonged periods in direct sunlight, especially between the hours of 10:00 am and 3:00 pm when the sun is at peak intensity.

• Dress appropriately to keep cool during the day, and ensure vulnerable members of society are not overdressed. Wear a sunhat if you need to be engaged in outdoor activities.

• The public is urged to avoid starting outdoor fires and safeguard against their spread by constructing fireguards that are maintained free from combustible matter and are at least 9 (nine) meters wide.

Isolated afternoon thundershowers are expected in areas along the main watershed with, a brief cloudy period coupled with hot and humid afternoon conditions. All other areas should be mostly sunny and hot by day, becoming mild towards evening. Brief cloudy periods and an odd shower remain probable over Beitbridge and Gwanda Districts.
