2023 Elections Forecast: Vapostori for ED Declare Opposition Will Never Rule Zimbabwe

Vapostori for Economic Development (ED), has vowed to defend President Emmerson Mnangagwa and declared the opposition will never rule Zimbabwe.

The group is yet another parallel structure to emerge in support of Mnangagwa’s re-election bid.

Vapostori for ED spokesperson, Obey Mapuranga says what happened in Zambia where the opposition dislodged the ruling party from power will not happen locally in next year’s elections. NewZimbabwe cites Mapuranga as saying:

Zimbabwe can not be similarised with other countries which are like Zambia. What happened in Zambia is not going to happen in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is a different country with its own spiritual doctrines.

What happened in Zambia most of you call it regime change, but right now in Zimbabwe there is not going to be any regime change and I am speaking of this from a spiritual point of view.

The opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) and other opposition parties say electoral victories of neighbouring countries, Zambia and Lesotho, are evidence that change is possible in Zimbabwe.

The ruling ZANU PF has been in power since 1980 when the southern African country attained independence from Britain.

The closest the opposition has been to dislodging ZANU PF from power is 2008 when then leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Morgan Tsvangirai defeated Robert Mugabe.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), however, called for a re-run saying there was no candidate which had attained 50+1 per cent of the total votes.

Violence preceded the re-run and Tsvangirai pulled out of the elections. Mugabe won the re-run which was contested by some minor parties.
