South Africa: Eskom Suspends Blackouts For Sunday

South Africa’s power utility, Eskom, has suspended blackouts for Sunday.

The embattled power utility has been implementing various stages of rolling blackouts for the past few weeks.

In a notice seen by Pindula News, Eskom said it will publish a statement about load-shedding during weekdays. Reads the post on the microblogging site, Twitter:

Loadshedding has been suspended at 12:00 today. Eskom will this afternoon publish a statement about the loadshedding profile for next week.

Eskom says power cuts were implemented to preserve emergency reserves.

The power utility which is owed about R50 billion by municipalities and government departments has in recent years been rolling out load-shedding in view of the shortage of generation capacity and breakdowns.

Meanwhile, the World Bank recently approved South Africa’s application for funding to kickstart the Just Energy Transition Project at Komati power station.

Eskom will receive a cash injection of R9 billion to fund the project that will eventually add renewables to South Africa’s energy mix.
