"90% Of Clothes Sold In Zimbabwe Are Second-hand"

About 90% of clothes being sold in Zimbabwe are smuggled second-hand clothes.

This was said by Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce president Mike Kamungeremu during an interview with Business Times.

The government banned the importation of second-hand clothes but they are being sold across the country, even in some remote areas an indication that corruption is rampant at the country’s porous borders.

Kamungeremu said support should be given to the textile industry and duty should be increased on clothes imported for resale in order to support the recovery of the local industry. He said:

There is policy inconsistency with regard to the sale of second-hand clothes (mabhero) – it is illegal to import second-hand clothing (bales) but legally permissible to sell them.

The City Councils levy businesses selling second-hand clothing and surely the local textile industry cannot be resuscitated this way.

About 90% of clothes being sold are smuggled second-hand clothes.

Why is it people are preferring to buy second hand clothes than new clothes ; do you think we are comfortable by buying second hand clothes ? Look at South Africa if someone goes around selling second hand clothes no one will buy them. If you want to barn them give workers better salaries so that they can afford to buy new clothes. 2 Our textile industries must produce good quality clothes with reasonable prices . Noone will buy second hand clothes if they have same price , same quality and cheap with new the new . That is the only way to barn second hand cloth

This piece of news that 90% of clothes being sold in Zimbabwe is second hand clothes is very disturbing. This is happening because there are no longer companies in Zimbabwe which are manufacturing new clothes. Bulawayo used to be known as the seat of clothes manufacturing. Today those companies are now only shells. David Whitehead Textiles was the only well known textile company in Zimbabwe. I am filled with memories of Botswananians streaming into Bulawayo to buy new clothes. David Whitehead Textiles has been placed under Judiciary Management. It reopening has been announced on several occasions, but nothing fruitful has materialised. Rolls of clothing material citizens find in the few shops still selling clothes materials are imported from India, Pakistan and the far East. Government must help to resuscitate David Whitehead Textiles first before banning the sale of second hand clothes in Zimbabwe. [ FOR HOW LONG CAN WE SURVIVE AS A COUNTRY WITHOUT TEXTILE INDUSTRY ? ]. [ VERUZHINJI VAVE KUDA GWETA NELSON CHAMISA KUTI PAVE NE SHANDUKO KWAYO NEHUTONGI HWEJEKERERE ]. [ IKO KUTONGA CHAIKOIKO KUNODA MAJANA KWETE IZVI ZVATIRI KUONA IZVI ]. Yours faithfully William Sonboy CHINEMBIRI [THE BUSH LAWYER4CCC].
