A 47-year-old Harare woman who last week claimed to have lost over US$62 000 to three robbers has been arrested for making a false report.
The woman claimed robbers armed with a pistol raided while she was counting the money in her bedroom at a house in Glen Lorne, Harare at around 1.30 pm and stole the cash.
A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) report seen by Pindula News on 10 November 2022 read:
The ZRP is investigating a robbery case where a woman aged 47 was robbed US$62 150 cash on November 9, 2022 at around 1.30pm in Glen Lorne, Harare by three unknown suspects.
The suspects, who were armed with an unidentified pistol pounced at the complainant’s residence and went to the bedroom where she was counting cash. They threatened her with a firearm before stealing the cash.
Police then appealed to anyone with information that might assist them with investigations to contact any nearest police station.
Some members of the public were sceptical while some blamed the alleged robbery on the erosion of the public’s confidence in the banking sector. Said one commentator:
Effects of having a poor banking sector, people keeping cash in houses instead of the bank.
Another one said:
The coincidence though! (When the robbers arrived, they went to the bedroom where SHE WAS COUNTING MONEY)
GandaRemvura @tinashechirape weighed in:
Having USD62k at home means they don’t believe in the banks. Deposit that money you will lose 5-8k to get it back.
Following investigations, Police sources said the woman had since been arrested for making a false report.
It is alleged that the woman was owing a lot of people money and wanted to get relief or sympathy from these people.
